Baumgesänge

Wo ich lebe, weht fast immer ein frischer Wind. Die Luft spielt auf den Bäumen und Sträuchern wie auf Äolsharfen. Im stürmischen Rauschen klingen sie wie ein gewaltiger Chor.

Im Wald gibt es eine Stelle, an der hohe Kiefern stehen, vielleicht 50 Jahre alt. Ist der Wind lebhaft, fangen sie an zu quietschen und zu knarren. Sie quieken, knattern, murren, maunzen und raspeln. Die starren Äste berühren einander. Hie und da knackt es, wenn tote Äste abbrechen. Spaziere ich nachts an dieser Stelle, hört es sich an wie auf einem großen alten Segler.

Die ganz jungen buschigen Kiefern in der nahen Heide, erst zehn oder 15 Jahre alt, sind Meisterinnen spirituellen Sphärenklanges. Ihr Sausen, das an- und abschwillt, ganz fein und zart erst, dann unvermittelt sphärisch-voll, den Kopf einhüllend und den Geist gefangennehmend, ist so wundersam, dass es mich immer wieder in die Heide lockt.

Die Birke, die hierzulande ein zahlenmäßig sehr großes Baumvolk bildet, ist überhaupt zu größter Modulation in ihren Gesängen fähig. Sie wispelt, raschelt und braust, doch stets meint man, jedes einzelne Blatt zu hören. Dazu biegt sie sich elastisch und äußerst pittoresk. Mit ihrem schwarz-weißen Stamm und ihrem gelben Herbstmantel ist sie neben der Eiche der markanteste Baum Norddeutschlands.

Ich kann mir keine Welt ohne Büsche und Bäume vorstellen. Sie sind Kinder der Natur wie ich. Sie gehören zu meiner Familie. Umso mehr entsetzt es mich, sie sterben zu sehen. Früher war es eine Seltenheit, einen abgestorbenen Baum zu finden. Es war gespenstisch, seine fahle graue Leiche inmitten des umgebenden Grüns aufragen zu sehen. Aber es geschah im natürlichen Kreislauf und wirkte nicht bedrohlich.

Im zurückliegenden Vierteljahrhundert hat sich das Bild gewandelt. Bei jedem Besuch im Wald sehe ich mehr tote Bäume. An den Waldrändern stehen, weithin sichtbar, immer längere Reihen von Toten. Ganze Waldviertel sind abgestorben und bereits abgeholzt. In meinem Garten starben in zwei Jahren drei Bäume und drei Büsche: eine Weide, zwei Fichten, zwei Wacholder und ein Holunderbusch. Die anhaltende  Dürre hat sie umgebracht - eine deutliche Folge des Klimawandels. Das letzte Jahrzehnt war das weltweit wärmste seit Beginn der Temperaturaufzeichnungen im achtzehnten Jahrhundert.

Der offizielle Waldzustandsbericht 2021 des Bundesministeriums für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (BMEL) summiert für 2020, dass 63 Prozent aller deutschen Bäume schwer geschädigt bzw. sterbenskrank sind. Sie haben lichte Kronen und verlieren ihre Nadeln und Blätter bereits im Sommer. Bei den vier einheimischen Hauptbaumarten ist das Bild noch schlechter. Nur noch einer von fünf Bäumen ist gesund. 79 Prozent der Fichten, 80 Prozent der Kiefern und 80 Prozent der Eichen sowie 89 Prozent der Buchen werden bald sterben. Es ist eine erschreckende Vorstellung, zu den letzten Menschen zu gehören, die noch jene hoch aufragenden Urwälder sehen, die es hierzulande gibt bzw. gab.

Die Buchen haben durch anhaltende Dürre und Grundwasserabsenkung seit mehreren Jahren ihre feinen Haarwurzeln verloren, ohne die sie kein Wasser mehr aufnehmen können. Die Fichten wurden nach dem anhaltenden Trockenstress ein leichtes Fressen für die Borkenkäfer, die sich explosionsartig vermehrt haben. Das BMEL hat penibel die Ertragseinbußen für die Holzindustrie hochgerechnet und, ganz auf das Wohlwollen der Forsteigner erpicht, den Entschädigungen in Aussicht gestellt, damit rasch ans Wiederaufforsten der Brachen mit resilienten Baumarten geschritten werden kann: Stieleiche statt Buche, Douglasie statt Fichte, mehr Ahorn, vielleicht Kirschbäume ... Von Nachjustierung, Anpassung, Korrektur ist da die Rede, als ginge es um eine schlechtlaufende Maschine.

Kein Wort darüber, dass es jetzt eventuell höchste Zeit sein könnte, die profitorientierte Forstwirtschaft zu beenden und auf natürliche Arten-Sukzession oder agrarisch orientierte Waldgärten zu setzen, statt auf neue Monokulturen und klassische Mischwälder. Deutschland könnte mit seiner Waldfläche das ganze Land ernähren, wenn sich die Waldbesitzer nur einmal die erfolgreiche und ertragreiche Waldgartenlandwirtschaft in anderen Ländern, etwa in Frankreich anschauen würden. Die englische Initiative Plants for a Future liefert zudem eine ständig erweiterte öffentlich zugängliche Datenbank von mehr als 7000 traditionellen Nutzpflanzen für den nachhaltigen ökologischen Anbau, z.B. in Perma- und Waldgartenkultur.

Freilich muss den Redakteuren des deutschen Waldzustandsberichts auch der Gedanke sehr fern liegen, dass es Familienangehörige sind, die wir mit unserer Waldwirtschaft und dem Verbrennen der fossilen Energieträger seit 1850 umbringen. Wir schädigen die Erde einzig und allein aus Profitgier, sanktioniert von der weltweit verderblichen Religion, dem Christentum, das den Menschen noch immer in seiner Propagandaschrift dazu anhält, sich die Erde untertan zu machen und alles was auf ihr kreucht und fleucht, so schnell wie möglich auszurotten.

Ich wünsche mir, dass kein Baum mehr abgesägt wird, auch wenn ich weiß, dass in jeder Minute 30 Fußballfelder tropischer Regenwald durch Menschenhand sterben. Weltweit werden jährlich zweistellige Millionenbeträge an Hektar Wald vom Menschen abgeholzt. Allein in Deutschland waren es - klimawandelfolgenbedingte "Säuberung" - im Jahr 2020 unvorstellbare 80,4 Mio Kubikmeter Holz: das ist die offizielle Maßeinheit für unsere durch Klimawandelfolgen und Holzwirtschaft umgekommenen Baumverwandten.

Die Bäume singen unbeirrt, auch wenn der nahe Tod sie schon bedroht. Viele Tiere und Pflanzen, für die der nun sterbende Wald Lebensraum war, werden mit ihnen zu Grunde gehen. All diese Tiere und Pflanzen sind unsere Geschwister. Es kümmert sie nicht, was ihnen bevorsteht, denn sie wissen, dass sie in anderen Formen weiterleben werden. Ich werde in den Wald gehen, zu den sterbenden Bäumen, ihnen die Hand auf die Rinde legen und sagen: Wir sind Geschwister. Ich weine um dich, aber ich weiß wie du, dass es keinen Tod gibt, sondern nur einen Übergang in einen anderen Zustand.

Das Bewusstsein für die essentielle Bedeutung des Waldes nimmt weltweit zu und hat auch in der Bildung einen immer höheren Stellenwert. Plant-for-the-Panet etwa - eine Privatinitiative ... - regt Kinder dazu an, den Wald als etwas Freundliches zu betrachten, dem man helfen muss. Jeder Erwachsene in Deutschland und in anderen Industrieländern kann auch etwas tun, doch es wird auf einen Bewusstseins- und Lebenswandelswandel hinauslaufen müssen.

Japanische Forscher um Nguyen Tien Hoang und Keiichiro Kanemoto vom Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Kyoto haben laut Anja Garms, dpa, erstmals den Einfluß des Konsumverhaltens der G7-Staaten und der internationen Handelsbeziehungen auf die Waldabholzung in vorwiegend tropischen Ländern untersucht. Die Ergebnisse, die im Fachmagazin "Nature Ecology and Evolution" publiziert sind, brachten Erschreckendes zum Vorschein:

"Zwei Fragen standen bei der Auswertung im Vordergrund: Welche Länder sind über ihren Konsum für welche Abholzungs-Hotspots verantwortlich, und welche Waldtypen werden durch die globalen Lieferketten vor allem beansprucht - tropische Regenwälder oder andere?

Die Auswertung ergab, dass "waldschädigende" Produkte wie Sojabohnen, Palmöl oder Holz zumeist von tropischen Ländern wie Brasilien, Madagaskar, Indonesien oder der Elfenbeinküste in die G7-Länder und nach China exportiert wurden. Japanische Konsumenten gefährden durch ihre Nachfrage nach Baumwolle und Sesam vor allem die Küstenwälder Tansanias. Der Konsum von Holz und Gummi in China wiederum führt in Indochina zur Abholzung. Kaffeetrinker in Deutschland, Italien und den USA treiben die Abholzung im vietnamesischen Hochland voran. Holzgewinnung in Nordvietnam wird vor allem durch die Nachfrage in China, Südkorea und Japan angetrieben. [...]  

Indem die Forscher die handelsbedingte Abholzung mit Karten zur Baumdichte in einzelnen Regionen kombinierten, ermittelten sie, wie viele Baumflächen - beziehungsweise einzelne Bäume - Konsumenten in einzelnen Ländern auf dem Gewissen haben. Der Konsum der Bürger der G7-Staaten im Jahr 2015 sorgte demnach für die Vernichtung von vier Bäumen oder 58 Quadratmeter Wald pro Jahr. In Schweden sind es vor allem wegen der Nutzung von Holz zur Elektrizitäts- und Wärmegewinnung sogar 22 Bäume - allerdings überwiegend aus heimischen Beständen. In China und Indien sind es dagegen weniger als einer. Die USA kommen auf fünf Bäume pro Kopf, in Deutschland, Frankreich, Großbritannien und Japan sind es jeweils etwa die Hälfte davon. / Die letztgenannten Länder hinterlassen in Bezug auf Abholzung 91 bis 99 Prozent ihres ökologischen Fußabdrucks in anderen Ländern, im Jahr 2015 entfielen davon 46 bis 57 Prozent auf tropische Wälder." Im Klartext bedeutet das, dass allein ca. 80 Mio Deutsche durch ihr Kakao- und Kaffee- und Sojamilchtrinken, ihren Palmölbedarf und ihre Vorliebe für Tropenhölzer die Abholzung von 200 Mio Bäumen verantworten. Noch einen Kaffee?


Tree songs

Where I live, there is almost always a fresh wind blowing. The air plays on the trees and bushes like aeolian harps. In the stormy rush they sound like a mighty choir.

There is a place in the forest where there are tall pines, perhaps 50 years old. If the wind is brisk, they begin to squeak and creak. They squeak, rattle, murmur, mew and rasp. The rigid branches touch each other. Now and then it cracks when dead branches break off. When I walk around this place at night, it sounds like I'm on a big old sailor.

The very young bushy pines in the nearby heath, only ten or 15 years old, are masters of spiritual spherical sound. Their whirring, which swells and swells, very fine and delicate at first, then suddenly spherically full, enveloping the head and capturing the spirit, is so wondrous that it lures me to the heath again and again.

The birch, which forms a numerically very large tree population in this country, is at all capable of the greatest modulation in its songs. It whispers, rustles and roars, but you always think you can hear every single leaf. In addition, it bends elastically and extremely picturesquely. With its black and white trunk and its yellow autumn mantle, it is, next to the oak, the most striking tree in northern Germany.

I cannot imagine a world without bushes and trees. They are children of nature like me. They belong to my family. All the more it horrifies me to see them die. It used to be a rarity to find a dead tree. It was haunting to see its pale gray corpse looming amidst the surrounding greenery. But it happened in the natural cycle and did not seem threatening.

In the past quarter century, the image has changed. Every time I visit the forest, I see more dead trees. Longer and longer rows of dead trees stand at the edges of the forest, visible from afar. Whole forest quarters are dead and already cut down. In my garden, three trees and three bushes died in two years: a willow, two spruces, two junipers, and an elder bush. The prolonged drought killed them - a clear consequence of climate change. The last decade was the warmest on record globally since temperature records began in the eighteenth century.

The official Forest Condition Report 2021 from the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) totals that 63 percent of all German trees are severely damaged or terminally ill by 2020. They have thinning crowns and lose their needles and leaves already in summer. The picture is even worse for the four main native tree species. Only one in five trees is still healthy. Seventy-nine percent of spruces, 80 percent of pines and 80 percent of oaks, and 89 percent of beeches will soon die. It is a frightening thought to be among the last people to see those towering virgin forests that exist or existed in this country.

For several years now, the beech trees have lost their fine hairy roots, without which they can no longer absorb water, due to persistent drought and lowering of groundwater levels. After the prolonged drought stress, the spruces became an easy meal for the bark beetles, which have multiplied explosively. The BMEL has meticulously calculated the yield losses for the timber industry and, eager to please the forest owners, has promised compensation so that the fallow land can be quickly replanted with resilient tree species: English oak instead of beech, Douglas fir instead of spruce, more maple, perhaps cherry trees ... There is talk of readjustment, adaptation, correction, as if it were a matter of a machine that is running badly.

Not a word about the fact that it might now be high time to end profit-oriented forestry and focus on natural species succession or agriculturally oriented forest gardens instead of new monocultures and classic mixed forests. Germany could feed the whole country with its forest area, if only forest owners would take a look at the successful and profitable forest garden agriculture in other countries, such as France. The English initiative Plants for a Future also provides a constantly expanding publicly accessible database of more than 7000 traditional crops for sustainable organic cultivation, e.g. in perma- and forest garden culture.

Admittedly, the editors of the German State of the Forest Report must also be very far from the idea that it is family members that we have been killing with our forest management and the burning of fossil fuels since 1850. We are damaging the earth solely out of greed for profit, sanctioned by the globally pernicious religion, Christianity, which still encourages man in its propaganda scripture to subjugate the earth and to exterminate everything that crawls and flies on it as quickly as possible.

I wish that no more tree is cut down, even though I know that every minute 30 soccer fields of tropical rainforest die at the hands of man. Worldwide, tens of millions of hectares of forest are cut down by humans every year. In Germany alone, it was an unimaginable 80.4 million cubic meters of wood - climate change-induced "cleanup" - in 2020: that's the official unit of measure for our tree relatives perished by climate change impacts and the timber industry.

The trees sing undeterred, even as near death already threatens them. Many animals and plants for which the now dying forest was habitat will perish with them. All these animals and plants are our brothers and sisters. They do not care what is in store for them, because they know that they will live on in other forms. I will go to the forest, to the dying trees, put my hand on their bark and say, "We are brothers and sisters. I weep for you, but I know, like you, that there is no death, only a transition to another state.

Awareness of the essential importance of the forest is growing around the world, and it is also becoming increasingly important in education. Plant-for-the-Panet, for example - a private initiative ... - encourages children to see the forest as something friendly that needs to be helped. Every adult in Germany and other industrialized countries can also do something, but it will have to come down to a change in awareness and lifestyle.

Japanese researchers led by Nguyen Tien Hoang and Keiichiro Kanemoto of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Kyoto have, according to Anja Garms, dpa, for the first time studied the influence of the G7 countries' consumption patterns and international trade relations on deforestation in predominantly tropical countries. The results, published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, revealed startling findings:

"Two questions were at the forefront of the evaluation: which countries are responsible for which deforestation hotspots through their consumption, and which forest types are primarily stressed by global supply chains - tropical rainforests or others?

The analysis showed that "forest-damaging" products such as soybeans, palm oil or timber were mostly exported from tropical countries such as Brazil, Madagascar, Indonesia or the Ivory Coast to the G7 countries and China. Japanese consumers endanger the coastal forests of Tanzania in particular through their demand for cotton and sesame. Consumption of wood and rubber in China, in turn, is causing deforestation in Indochina. Coffee drinkers in Germany, Italy and the USA are driving deforestation in the Vietnamese highlands. Timber extraction in North Vietnam is driven primarily by demand in China, South Korea, and Japan. [...] By combining trade-driven deforestation with maps of tree density in individual regions, the researchers determined how many tree acres - or individual trees - consumers in individual countries have on their conscience.

According to the study, consumption by citizens of the G7 countries in 2015 resulted in the destruction of four trees or 58 square meters of forest per year. In Sweden, the figure is as high as 22 trees, mainly due to the use of wood for electricity and heat generation - albeit mostly from domestic stocks. In China and India, on the other hand, the figure is less than one. The USA has five trees per capita, while Germany, France, the UK and Japan each have around half that number. / In terms of deforestation, the latter countries leave 91 to 99 percent of their ecological footprint in other countries, with tropical forests accounting for 46 to 57 percent of that in 2015." In plain language, this means that around 80 million Germans alone are responsible for the deforestation of 200 million trees through their cocoa and coffee and soy milk drinking, their palm oil consumption and their preference for tropical woods. Another coffee?
